How we assess your loved one

We start getting an idea of the care your loved one needs from the very first contact we have with you. Usually, we have a few calls with a family member, answering questions and discussing your options along the way before arranging a face-to-face assessment. Once we agreed on a time, one of our Care Leads (Sue, Wendy or Fiona) will meet you and your loved one(s) at your or your loved one’s home for a face-to-face assessment. If a face-to-face assessment is not possible we can do video calls, but we do prefer to meet face to face as it is much more informative and makes such a difference when we meet your family first.

When we meet you and your loved one for a face-to-face assessment, we aim to establish their physical and mental care needs and understand their personality and lifestyle, so we can find a carer(s) suited to them both professionally and personally.

After several initial phone calls, emails and meeting you and your loved one(s) face-to-face we then prepare an assessment we will share with you. We tend to find this gets amended a few times before we all agree we have a good understanding of your loved one(s) needs and we can begin to start matching carers. We begin building up an idea of whom among our carers might be suitable for you from our first few calls, and once you are happy with our assessment you can expect to get a shortlist of carers from us within a few days.

Below are some of the things we might ask and take into consideration when meeting face to face:

  • Why are you looking for a live-in carer

  • Do you have any experience with live-in care

  • What do you believe your loved one’s care needs are

  • What information do you have from your loved one’s GP and/or Social Services

  • How involved are you/do you and your family want to be in your loved one’s day to day life and care needs

  • We discuss your loved one’s home and living arrangements and ask if you have had any formal assessments of their home

  • As well as your assessment we also get to understand your loved one(s) care needs through meeting them and talking with them

We try to get to know your loved one(s) as much as possible by asking them/you about:

  • Their background, life history, marriage, work, children

  • What they like to eat and drink

  • What do they enjoy watching on TV

  • Do they enjoy watching sport on TV and if so who their favourite teams/players are

  • What music do they like

  • What books they like to read

  • Do they enjoy doing any regular from of exercise

  • Do they have any hobbies

  • How socially active are they

  • Do they have any social clubs e.g. Bridge/Books

  • Do they like going to church

How we match our carers

Once we are comfortable we understand your loved one(s) care needs and personality we create a shortlist of carers for you to consider. As well as making sure the carer has the training, skills and experience necessary it’s extremely important to make sure they are a good personal match too. It’s a very personal choice to invite a carer to live in your home and experience every moment of your life with them. Your loved one’s carers will be living with them 24/7, sharing their highs and lows, cheering them up when they are down, laughing with them when they are happy, sharing their family stories and caring for them when they are vulnerable. It’s a very personal relationship and so requires the right personality match to give your loved ones and our carers the best chance to build a friendly care relationship, while your family can have complete trust in our carer’s professionalism.

As well as our carer’s professional experience, we think this personality match is one of the reasons why our clients love us.

  • We have a select list of carers (about 50) we have got to know over our 20 years of caring experience

  • We know our carers personally through their many years working with us

  • We match our carers knowing their skills, personality and life preferences

  • We do not place carer’s based on their location

  • We do not have a large database with AI-driven selection criteria

Below are some of the things we take into consideration when choosing a carer

  • First and foremost its a professional fit

  • Do they have the necessary skills and experience to look after your loved one

  • How much physical care and support will the carer need to provide

  • How much emotional support will the carer need to provide

  • Do they share similar sports and cultural interests

  • Do they share a similar level of interest and taste in food

  • Will their personalities match or be complimentary

  • How socially outgoing are they

  • How much do they enjoying going outdoors
